    A freelance writer, Jeanne Lenzer wrote an article entitled Drug Secrets–What the FDA Is Telling, published in Slate magazine September 27, 2005. She told how she filed several Freedom of Information Act requests and received a database that included 41 deaths and 13 suicides among patients taking Cymbalta. She wrote: “Missing from the database was any record of Johnson, were at least 4 other volunteers known to have committed suicide while taking Cymbalta… that the use of trade-secret laws to conceal deaths and serious side effects linked to drugs as the obvious flaw of putting profits before public health.” (These are facts from the book, but are not direct quotes, and are found on page 12.)

    The story of Woody Witczak and Zoloft is an excellent example of how physicians, relying on the pharmaceutical industries distorted protocols for the use of a drug, brought disaster in the form of death.  Woody had no history of mental illness or depression.  His doctor prescribed Zoloft to help him sleep.  Soon after, he developed night sweats, diarrhea, trembling hands, increased anxiety, and a new extreme feeling vegetation and restlessness.  His physician responded by doubling the dose.  A few days later, on August 6, 2003, after being 5 weeks on the medication, Woody was found hanging from the rafters in his garage.  He was 37 years old, his life snuffed out by Zoloft induced suicide, coupled with medical incompetence.  He was never warned that suicide was a side effect of taking so long.  Only after much investigation in Woody’s family learned that the FDA had known about the risk for over 20 years, long before this class of antidepressant drugs ever hit the market. (These are facts from the book, but are not direct quotes, and are found on pages 12-13.)

    [Note: In 2005, the FDA added a black box warning concerning pediatric suicidality to all antidepressants, including sertraline. In 2007, labeling was again changed to add a warning regarding suicidality in young adults ages 18 to 24.]
