Church Member Under Investigation for Child Molesting

FAQ: How should I treat a member who is under investigation or who has suddenly been charged with child molesting?

Answer: Unfortunately, you cannot adopt the “innocent until proven guilty” posture with respect to some things concerning this member. Depending on the evidence presented (which may be substantial), you may have to exclude the person for membership.

Whatever the evidence is, whether slight or heavy, you absolutely must remove this person from any contact with children, for at least 3 reasons:

1. You do not know whether he is guilty. If you leave a guilty man in a position in which children are available, you risk the 2nd incident, which could be devastating financially.

2. The media will treat you with respect if they see you being responsible.

3. You need to send a message to the other members of the church that their children are safe and that steps will be taken to isolate individuals from contact with children if there is any question. Pages 50-51
